How to score
Base every score on evidence: the funder’s guidelines, its recent grants (from its website, annual report or Form 990-PF), and what its staff tell you. Geography and open access are deal-breakers: if a funder doesn’t give in your area, or only funds pre-selected organizations and you have no way in, the scorecard flags it whatever the total.
Use the score to rank where you spend writing time. A funder scoring 75 or more is worth a tailored approach now; 50 to 74 is worth cultivating; below 50, move on. See grant prospecting and researching funders with 990s.
