How to use this budget
Enter every cost of the project, not just the part you’re asking this funder to pay. Put money from other sources (your own funds, other grants, donated goods and volunteer time) in the Match column. The request is what’s left.
The justification draft explains each line with its arithmetic. Edit it to say why each cost is necessary for the project. That’s what reviewers look for. Our grant budget guide and budget justification template show how.
About the indirect-cost math
For federal awards, modified total direct costs (MTDC) leave out equipment, participant support costs, and each subaward’s amount above the cap, among other exclusions (2 CFR 200.1). This tool applies those three. Rental costs, tuition remission, scholarships and patient care are also excluded, so put them in a separate line and check the result with the indirect cost calculator. Most foundations instead apply a flat percentage to total direct costs, or cap overhead. See indirect costs explained.
Your budget is saved in this browser only. This is a planning aid: follow the funder’s own budget form and rules.
